His father also hocked Jim’s guitars when he needed money. Jim came home to find this guitar after his dad traded in the Gibson 330. This is what they called a Gretsch Anniversary model. Lee Abrams’ father was kind enough to loan us the money for our initiation fees to join the union. Gary and Steve Crosse did not have to join because they did not play an instrument on stage. Crosse later got trouble for playing a harmonica on stage in Wisconsin and not being union. We paid back Lee’s father after some jobs came in after winning the battle. Rumor was that if we refused to join the union some goons would come by and destroy our equipment. Mike is sitting wearing the cowboy hat and Chris is standing behind Mike. This was called “Pendragon” to start with. Chris went on to become the lead player for “Coven” and Mike went to “Lovecraft” which had Marty Grebb from the “Buckinghams” and Michel Tegza from Bangor Flying Circus along w/Jim Donglinger form Aorta. Of course Mike Been is better known for the group “The Call” formed in the late 70’s. He also appeared in the movie”The Last Temptation of Christ”. I thought I would be the roadie for these guys but that was just a fleeting thought. This photo was taken some time after the battle. As you can see they are completely outfitted with Kustom amps and PA. Notice the Fugitives cards. Ross the lead player was a good friend in 8th grade. This was the first local band I was aware of. They later became Capt. Zero and his Bushmen. There is a connection for me in all of these cards. The card in the center “The Dimensions Of Thyme” was managed by Lee Abrams who was our manager in 67. The Cavaliers card has Roger Johnson as manager. I bought my first Fender guitar, [a Jaguar] from Roger. The Marauders card has Don Mitchell who was the older brother of Rick Mitchell who was a witness to my purchase of Roger’s Jag I bought. The “Distractions” card is an early one with the vocalist’s name crossed out. Still a mystery as to who that person was. They even had recorded a single called “Raise The Roof with The Fugitives” featuring an instrumental titled “Stoked”.
